Fiesta De San Juan Salobrena
Well there you have it folks, another year has come and gone on the San Juan front. The beach was packed out with happy revelers and despite the fact that it was held on a Tuesday night, we did get many out of town folk here for the evening.
The beach was closed off to vehicular traffic on the beach after a certain hour, and so it was a strollers paradise.
This year I managed to get there a bit late, so I managed to miss the initial lighting of the fire, which I could actually see from my apt in the old town so no loss. Anyway, I got there soon enough, the streets were heaving, the fireworks were fantastic, what a display! this year saw something different again.. this year there was a fire truck standing by on the ready, plus they had barricades around the actual fire.. Good Lord.. they aren’t going to make it SAFE for everyone are they. Another interesting thing that was done, was the launching of small hot air balloons, made up of paper shades and candles..It was very pretty to see them flying and hanging about in the sky.

The hot air balloons where sent up by us. We had loads of them but the police came and told us to stop
They were cool, but I guess they were worried about the wind and them landing in the dry grasses… They looked fantastic though
On another note, I felt that the city had tried to make it safer for people this year. Never have I seen the barricades around the fire before, nor have I seen a firetruck on standby at the fiesta either. It’s the beginning of the end when the government starts to protect us from ourselves.
I just wished i was there!

It looks like Salobrena is about to kill the golden goose to cover their debts.
