When I came across this bit of creative driving.

There is a bit of a steep hill on a turn that led to this.. Our driver was going too fast and hit the steps and, well you can see.. this is exactly how they do those spectacular car flips in the movies.. well almost, they use a small ramp. You accelerate as two wheels go over the ramp and voila you are over. Notice the left front wheel is actually resting on the wall of the house.

Salobreña is so small that we don’t even have traffic lights.. Oh they put them in years ago, but in the 8 years that I have lived here, they have yet to be put into use. We prefer the almighty round-about. We have rules like all societies, it’s just that no one pays any real attention to them. Stop signs really mean.. um slow down take a look and then proceed. No parking means you can kinda park here if it is late enough at night, and you move it first thing in the morning. You can park on a crosswalk, especially if in doing so you are double parked at the time..No one gets too fluffed about it, however as a driver from another country, it can be quite daunting… I snapped this picture yesterday of a no parking sign yesterday. This has been chained to this no parking sign for about 6 months.

Whilst driving through the campo on my scooter today I came across this herd of goats trying to steal this car. Honest. Well maybe not steal it, but certainly eat it. You know goats, they will eat anything. If you have ever driven your car into the campo, parked it, and then come back to find it a little worse for wear, this could be the reason.

Mmmm rusty.

This post doesn’t really apply to restaurants in Salobreña so much as it does all restaurants and street food vendors in general around the world. Many people suffer with an inevitable bout the Leon Trotski’s while eating abroad, but is it inevitable or is it entirely preventable?

One of the most abundant foods that you will come across just about anywhere is rice, it’s cheap, easily stored and a staple in most 3rd world countries. Rice is also one of the most potentially dangerous too, as each grain of rice carries a bacterial strain called Bascillus Cereus which survives cooking. If the rice once cooked, is not cooled quickly and refrigerated, the bacteria multiply rapidly and then become a problem causing anything from mild to severe cramping, vomiting and diarrhea.

Rice that has been cooked, allowed to cool at room temperature, refrigerated and then reheated is just as dangerous, as cooking does NOT kill the bacteria. So for all you travelers out there be wary of the mighty grain of rice. For more information, check this link.

I feed these little ones everyday, they live across town in a quite pedestrian only neighborhood.  When I first started feeding them, they were really timid, and so thin..now they are getting very friendly and fattening up nicely.

In the immortal words of Jim McKay.. “Oh The Thrill of Victory and The Agony of Defeat”. What a GAME. We here in Salobreña are going to be riding this high for weeks to come..Nothing puts the Spanish in a better mood than a key victory on the football pitch. It was a great night across town nay Spain last night as our Spanish team trounced the German team to win 1-0. Oh what a feeling !! Sorry no pictures.

Oh my dog we had fun last night.. I mean this morning.. (((ouch))). Last night’s fiesta de San Juan was just fantastic. I think our group crawled in about 530 this morning, but is was sooooooo worth it, except I have to work today..sniff. Anyway, before I shoot off to the salt mines this morning, I thought I would share with you some of the photos from last night…By golly you missed a good one!

These first 2 photos are the official fire starters making there way down to the beach along main road.

There were thousands on the beach last night for fireworks, live music, dancing, wish making and just all around fun. The tradition is, that you are supposed to make a wish, write it on a scrap of paper and throw it into the fire, and then take a dip in the ocean, which thousands did..

Another glorious day at the beach for the boys of summer.  The water here now is perfect for swimming or leaping off tall buildings into…okay they are just rocks.

Two weeks ago I posted this picture of the beach, it was Sunday afternoon at 12pm.. Today I went to the same location and took another shot.  This weekend is busy here in Salobreña, but the full on holiday makers won’t get here until after the 1st of July.. For two months this town is awash with tourists, and it’s super fun..the best time of the year.. Best of all, 99percent of the tourism is still Spanish.
