The annual Almuñecar Jazz Festival is back again this year with a great lineup of musical stars, and as always promises to be a great week.  It all kicks off on the 17th of July and runs to the 24th of July.  It’s a great lineup this year, so if you are at all able to attend, you must do so. This year’s lineup is as follows:  Be sure to check out their musical stylings in the videos provided.  Enjoy! Almuñecar is just 20 minutes by car from Salobreña.

Saturday 17July-Bobby Hutcherson and Cedar Walton Quartet.

Bubby Hutcherson is a first rate vibraphonist and marimba player and he will be joined by pianist Cedar Walton, who has played with such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane.

Sunday 18July-Rubem Dantas Octet with Chano Dominguez.

You many know Rubem Dantas as the man who discovered the boom/slap sound of the cajón in Peru who then  imported it to Spain and into Flamenco where it plays a very pivotal role.  This Brazillian born musician has collaborated with the likes of  Enrique Morente, Camarón de la Isla, Chick C orea, Jorge Pardo and Ketama. Chano Dominguez is a flamenco-jazz fusion piano playing genius and will be guest starring in the show.

Monday 19July-Christian Scott Quintet.

Twenty seven year old trumpetist Christian Scott is not only a great musician, but fashion designer, athelete and  visual artist.  He is riding high after his 2010 release of “Yesterday You Said Tomorrow” album, touted to be the best jazz album of the year.  He is another must see.

Tuesday 20July- James Carter Quintet.

A talented saxophonist, floutest, and clarinet player Carter hails from Detroit City and has played with the likes of Wynton Marsalis and Lester Bowie.

Wednesday 21July-Madeleine Peyroux.

Vocalist Madeleine Peyroux started as a street musician and quite often returns there when her schedule of recording dates and touring get too much. If you like Billie Holiday’s style, then you will love Madeleine’s.  She has a sultry voice reminicient of Diana Krall  which never fails to please.

Thurdays 22July- Stanley Clarke Band with Hiromi.

Stanley Clarke along with Jaco Pastorius are the two bassists primarily responsible for the often misunderstood modern solo bass solo.  Clarke rose to fame in the 70’s and together with Chick Corea he formed Return to Forever, which recorded many albums of international acclaim. He has also worked with Ron Wood, Steward Copeland and Jeff Beck. Japanese jazz pianist Hiromi will be featured as well.

Friday 23Jul-Uri Caine Bedrock with Barbara Walker

Uri Caine’s Bedrock combines disco, house, hiphop, gospel, drum&bass, jazz  and you name it to form wonderfully playful imporvisations that will spin you right round baby right round. Singer Barbara Walker complements the group with her moving gospel style.

Saturday 24Jul- David Sanborn Trio with Joey DeFrancesco and Steve Gadd.

Everybody knows David Sanborn, he has worked with all the greats as well as having a successful solo career. He is one of the most gifted saxophone players in the world. A bit of name dropping, he has worked with Stevie wonder, Paul Simon, James Taylor, David Bowie, The  Stones and many more.  He is joined in Almuñecar by organist Joey DeFrancesco and drummer Steve Gadd.
