This summer I had the pleasure of doing this trail twice, once in June and again in September.  What a fantastic way to spend an afternoon for anyone that wants to get off the couch and go for a beautiful walk through the stunning gorge at El Chorro north of Malaga.

One thing to note, is that booking ahead is a must.  Tickets must be purchased online in advance to ensure entry most times in the year.  http://www.caminitodelrey.info/en/#1  this is the website with the English language preference chosen.  It is also available in French, German and Spanish.

I can’t put into words how enjoyable this walk is.. A guided tour is not necessary, and in fact more enjoyable doing it without the guide, you can move at your own pace.

Things of importance to note.

When you arrive at Ardales, the start of the trail, there is ample parking a restaurant and cafe/bar with facilities.

When you book your ticket, you book a start/entry time. It is important to note that it is 2.5 or 1.5 kilometer walk in to get to the start of the walk, so leave yourself enough time to ensure you get to the gate at your starting time.  There are toilet facilities here as well and places to sit while awaiting your entry time.  Be early.

There are 2 entrances at the start, the first one is located right next to the cafe and is the longer and slightly more challenging route from the one that is located about 100 meters from the cafe. If mobility is an issue, I highly recommend the route that is located 100 meters from the cafe.  A small flash light is a good idea as you go thru a low tunnel to get through the rock for 20 meters or so, rocky floor so a flashlight is a good idea.

At the end of the walk, there is a bus that you can take back to the start where you parked. It’s under 3 euros.  Another option is to drive to the El Chorro end of the trail, park your car, take the bus to the start and then walk back to your car.  There are restaurants and facilities at both ends. Give yourself extra time if you are doing this method as the bus takes about 20 minutes to circumnavigate the gorge and get to the start.

Children under 8 are not permitted nor are any persons that require carrying. No hikers backpacks are permitted either as in place the trail is narrow.  Small day packs are welcome, be sure to bring a snack and some water.

The trail in total is about 7.5 km depending on which entrance you use and takes about 3 hours at a leisurely pace.

Thursday of this week I had the great pleasure of traveling to a little town just north of  Salobreña in the Lecrin Valley called Nigüelas.  It is a sleepy little town nestled in the south-western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and at this time of year the sun is shining, the skies are deep blue and the weather for walking is perfect.

My friend and I were in Nigüelas to survey a walk to be done later in the month by the International Club of Salobreña.  Di quite often leads groups on hikes and walks, and every once in a while I get to go on the scouting missions. Happy Dance.

When you first arrive in Nigüelas, you will be coming in on the GR 400 this changes to Calle Trinidad.  There is a large parking lot on the left, right next to one of the bars, park here.  On foot, continue on along on Calle Trinidad right through town and out the other side.  You will pass  the Romantic Gardens, the old Olive Oil Mill and Museum, the Town Hall, which is located in the Romantic Gardens, and the Church.  Several little cafes, bakeries, even a rural guest house by the name of Casa Rural Lino.

If you continue on, the road will eventually slope downwards leading you into the countryside and onto the walking trails. While in town, stay to the right always.  There are two trails of interest.  One is a suspended walking trial with railing that meanders along the cliff face just below some cave houses. This is found by taking the left fork in the road.  The other is the walking trail that leads you up and over the mountains.  At the moment, the suspended trail is closed due to a portion of the trail collapsing in a recent storm.  Restoration has begun though.

You will know you are in the right place when you cross over the small stream. At this point, there is a map with routes and you can choose your destiny.  We went over the small stream and went left.  We by no means did the entire trail, we went as far as we wanted and doubled back, a good spot to aim for if you are just an occasional walker is Castelejos up in the hills.   The trail is actually a dirt/gravel road that you follow, so it’s not easy to get lost. Remember to bring lunch or snacks and something to drink.  Google earth is an excellent tool to use to get an aerial view of the area.

So after the trip to El Torcal, we climbed back on board the bus and we were whisked off to the lovely city of Antequera just 20 km away.  Antequera is a beautiful city with breath-taking views, gorgeous architecture, Roman ruins and two large Bronze Age Dolmens to mention just  a few of its attractions.  It was inexpensive to eat out, and spectacularly clean.  This is very doable as a one day outing, but I would suggest an overnight stay as it is so beautiful and there is so much to see.  On our short walk around, we barely scratched the surface, I can see a return trip in my future. Enjoy!

A fantastic little place to eat and drink with very reasonable prices. Located right in front of the Museum Square

This week I had the good fortune to join some friends at the International Club for a hike through El Torcal National Park.  What was originally described as a walk through Torcal, turned out to be a difficult and somewhat treacherous hike for some.  After all the rain that we have had, the track was quite muddy and slippery in parts, but it did not deter us, we crept onward.

El Torcal is a small mountain range lying between Malaga and Antequera, the highest point of which is 1336m.  There are 3 walking routes, the 1.5km Green which is the easiest and should take about 30 minutes, the 2.5km Yellow which travels along the green route for a good portion of the walk before veering off on its own, and finally the 4.5km Red route which takes about 3 hours.  None of these walks is really suited for anyone with any kind of mobility issues  as it is quite rocky and steps up or down can be a quite steep.  Leave the weakest behind, and save yourself.

It’s a lovely day trip from Salobreña, with a follow-up trip to Antequera or the Wolf Park.
