Well we got there early, so there was plenty of walking around room, that did change fairly quickly though.. what started out slow built nicely into a very enjoyable afternoon on the Paseo de Flores drinking beer and trying the many different tapas.

From sausages to paella, you could have had it all.  Excellent tapas, great weather, and excellent company, what else do you need.  Now just remember, today is day of the child over at the fair grounds, as per normal, the bulk of the action will take place in the evening.

Tomorrow is the Fiesta de San Juan, so don’t forget, grab your bathing suit and get down to the beach.. Tomorrow it all starts around 11pm.  If you are here, try not to miss this day as it is the most fun fiesta we have have.

Even Radio Salobrena was here transmitting live from the festival.

Weeeee we are celebrating Music, Food and Alcohol.

We have an exciting weekend coming up on the 20th of this month.. This is the weekend of the annual Fiesta de la Tapa taking place on the Paseo de Flores. Starting at 1pm.

Included in the activities are the following:

Firstly, there will be 4 bars, at which you can purchase beverages and try many of the different tapas up for grabs. A coffee and tea bar with an excellent selection of local pastries will also be available.

In the evening or late afternoon, there will be a Hip Hop competition between the 2 finalist groups in a contest put on by Radio Salobreña.

There will be top notch Juggling performance with Dario Dumont and Swinkles with his show ‘Yastin Gigolo’

There will Theatre in the Streets by the Group “Theatre Vegalume” with their work ‘Nostraladamus’.

At the Seniors Center, there will be  dance troops performing flamenco and other forms of dance as well.

Sunday June 21st

This day is set aside for the Potato Tortilla aficionados. A contest is being held to determine just who makes the best darn Tortilla in Town. The competition is being put on the by the Association of the Casco Antiqua de Salobreña. This is an association of neighbors.

The competition is simple.. Make a tortilla, have it there with it’s recipe by 1pm, judging starts at 1:30pm. This must be a homemade tortilla from scratch, no cook books please.

A jury will decide the winner, who will in turn win a weekend hotel stay at a 4star hotel for 2.

The jury will be made up from restaurant personnel and the head of the local Culinary school.   As well as all this great food to try and cold beers to be downed, three musical groups will be performing for your enjoyment.

Generally speaking this starts about 130pm and finishes around 4, so don’t leave it to late to enjoy the tortilla contest. Good news for the parents, there will also be a bouncy castle for the little ones.

And don’t forget, all this is followed by fire juggling, and partying on the beach on the 23rd for the Annual Fiesta de San Juan. To see some photos, you can refer to June 2008 in the archives, there are plenty of pictures.

One of the long standing chiringuitos on the beach in Salobreña is a place called El Molino, in English The Mill or in this case The Wind Mill.  Saturday, myself and two of my closest friends here in Spain decided to head down for lunch. The place was packed, and as a matter of fact, we were in danger of not getting a table.  Deciding to stop for a quick caña (a small beer) at the overcrowded bar paid off, within minutes there was a table available where minutes before there was none.  Mental note. Always drink to avoid disappointment!

We were seated inside which was fine, as all of the large windows and doors were open allowing for a nice cool gentle breeze to sail through.  We ordered a round of drinks and perused the menu.  Here is what we ordered.

My two friends ordered a Paella Mixta for 2 and I had the Cazón, which is  dry battered chunks of fish deep fried.  We also shared a small salad.  I neglected to get a photo of my lunch, but probably just as well, as it wasn’t the best Cazón I’ve have ever had.  The girls liked their paella, although they thought it a bit wet.  A good paella is cooked just so, so that the bottom layer of rice starts to get crispy.  To get a paella that is like that is to die for.  For you novices out there, a paella mixta is a paella that contains not only seafood, but meat as well.. it can be chicken, pork or beef.

All in all I give the lunch a 6 out of 10, It takes a lot to impress me in a restaurant. The company a 10 and the view another 10 giving an overall rating of, 26 out of 30.    Our bill came to 48 euros for the 3 of us and here is the list of what we got.

1 paella for 2-photo included

1 order cazón

1 small salad- see photo

4 Tubo´s of beer

2 bottles of beer sin alcohol- don’t get caught drinking and driving here my friends

3 glasses of white wine

A busy traditional Spanish lunch experience  is what you really want when dining out in Spain, and we got that.  We were the only non-Spanish people in the place, and I did not see one order of chips and egg go out!

When looking for the photos to post, I thought this was the after photo not the before.. I had to look 2 or 3 times.. don't be fooled though, it was apparently pretty good.
